For already registered users it is now possible to upgrade from previous versions of Endian Firewall Community to version 2.5.1. However, right now this is only possible for systems that are already registered in the Endian Community and are registered in the Development (bleeding edge) channel. If you are unsure whether your system is registered in the development or in the production channel, you can find out by typing smart channel –show | grep devel. The result should look like this:

smart channel --show | grep devel
baseurl = http://USERNAME:community@updates.endian.org/devel/

If the output is empty you have chosen the production channel. In this case upgrades are not available for you yet.
If your system is registered in the development channel you can perform the upgrade by running the following commands.

smart update
smart upgrade efw-upgrade
efw-upgrade

The upgrade will then start and take quite some time depending on the version that was previously installed. Upgrading from version 2.5 is quite fast, all other versions will download and install hundreds of packages and the upgrade procedure will therefore take a long time.

Last but definitely not least: if your system is not yet registered please wait a few more days – upgrading now might cause issues (you might also have to run efw-upgrade a few times until everything is ready in this case).

Enjoy!
Your Endian Team

The update for Endian Firewall Community to version 2.5.1 is now available! This release introduces the following new features:

New features in the 2.5 series:

Connectivity – Support for most modern UMTS/3G USB dongles
By adding new drivers Endian Firewall 2.5 now supports most modern UMTS/3G dongles. Once plugged in the appear as serial devices and can be configured by choosing Analog/UMTS modem as uplink type. You will find the newly created serial devices in the Serial/USB Port dropdown.

System – Performance improvements
The whole system startup procedure has been rewritten. Endian’s new jobsengine decreases the startup by 50 percent. Additionally major improvements have been made in memory usage. A fully configured system’s memory footprint has been reduced by more than 200 megabytes.

Contentfilter – Configurable update intervals
The contentfilter blacklists are now updatable through the GUI like for any other service and updates do not rely on the release of new packages anymore. The interval can be chosen from hourly, daily, weekly and monthly.

Dashboard – Customizable through configurable widgets
The new dashboard is now fully customizable through the use of configurable widgets. The update interval for all widgets can be set individually now, widgets can be placed by drag and drop and it is possible to deactivate widgets completely..

Logging – Trusted timestamping
Endian Firewall now supports trusted timestamping using OpenTSA. This feature allows you to make sure your log files have not been modified after they have been archived.

Routing – Additional gateway options
The policy based routing and static routing modules have been extended. It is now possible to use static gateways for routes as well as to route traffic through OpenVPN connections.

Bugfixes
Huge efforts have been made to create a very stable release. On the road to Endian Firewall Community 2.5.1 many small improvements have been made and hundreds of bugs have been fixed.

For detailed information please download the Community Release Note TXT document.

Hi blog readers,
today I have rumour from our development team!

The last 2.3 beta release is on my desk!!

This is the fourth beta and it’s full featured, I’ve been testing it for one week now and it looks stable.
The GUI is almost definitive, same for the strings (we will start soon the translation).

Are you part of the Endian Community?
There’s a revelation for you!!

We will release soon the 2.3 Release Candidate 1 which will be available to the world!!!

Moreover a good news for Endian 2.2 Enterprise users:
in a couple of weeks we are releasing few patches which fix some annoying bugs.

Be quiet, don’t spread the news
